After three years, Alvvays has finally announced plans for their new album, Antisocialites, to be released on September 8, 2017, on Polyvinyl Records in the US. It’s the follow up we’ve all been craving for to their self-titled debut album, which is filled with cheery melodies and restless lyrics. If “In Undertow” is any indication for the rest of Antisocialites, we are sure to see more of Alvvays’ signature sunny-pop sound.
“In Undertow” is a stoic reflection on a break up. Alvvays, always reminiscent of summer symbols, parallels relationships to waves -- “You find a wave and try to hold on for as long as you can”. The lyrics are distanced and reserved, as if they are relinquishing pain and loss by taking up a perspective of compliance. Letting go is painful, and sometimes inevitable, but necessary in order to begin again.
Melodically, the track is every bit as dreamy and powerful as their past discography, with maybe just a little bit more reverb. On my first listen, I wasn’t hooked, but by my second and third, I could envision adding the song to a playlist.
Alvvays also released the tracklist to Antisocialites and announced a European and North American tour.
