Advanced Falconry — Mutual Benefit When I first listened to “Advanced Falconry”, I thought it was the most beautiful song I’d ever heard. It’s so delicately crafted; you barely notice the entrance of each new instrument -– tender strings, carefully layered banjo, slight tambourine -– as they all weave together to create a dream of a song. It came into my life at a time when I thought I was falling in love for the first time, and it still captures that feeling perfectly: “To look into her eyes / Will make a fool of anyone…I won’t forget the way she flies.”

I Love You — Lou Reed
“I Love You,” features some of my favorite lyrics of all time, approaching love with simple wisdom that stands the tests of time. Lou Reed croons with a half smile that “at least for now, I love you,” attesting to the temporality of all existence. In such few words, he assures the listener of the validity of their emotions, no matter how fleeting or inconsequential they appear. Small disclaimers that acknowledge “those smiling faces” explore the human notion that past love continues to haunt each of us. Together, he paints a more truthful image of how we process, deal, and even relish the rich emotions we feel for each other, something that few works of art achieve with the same poise.

Romeo and Juliet -- Dire Straits
A classic and timeless love ballad, “Romeo and Juliet” begins with a nonchalant arpeggio, a repetitive riff that sets the rosy scene of the track. Like the tragic play, the love story in the song falls apart as “Juliet” finds fame, leaving “Romeo” in the dust. Despite the discontinued romance, “Romeo and Juliet” is still very much a love song. Even though Juliet is long gone, Romeo still displays a willingness to love wholeheartedly. The lyrics detail memories of the past relationship not with the bitterness of an ex in denial, but instead with a sweet, longing aftertaste. It is because of that genuine, lasting, vulnerable love of the song that “Romeo and Juliet” is an enduring favorite.

Archie, Marry Me -- Alvvays
Alvvays’ “Archie, Marry Me” is a floaty jangle-pop wonder defined by its embrace of unabashedly spontaneous young love. Its lyrics and smooth melody mesh together to draw a listener in and take them through the dizzying whimsy of a joyful relationship. “Being too young to stay in” and “scouring the streets for trouble” are images of beauty that Alvvays paints authentically and emphatically.

One Fine Day - The Chiffons
There’s no better day to take a dip in the dreamy waves of late-sixties sunshine pop with The Chiffons' One Fine Day. The sugary sweet melodies and catchy doo-wop style hook bounce effortlessly between heartache and hope in perfect harmony. No matter what kind of day you’ve been happening, fine or otherwise, One Fine Day is here for you.
