Alvvays
ALBUM TITLE: Alvvays
ARTIST: Alvvays
GENRE: Pop / Jangle Pop / Lo-Fi
The self-titled debut album of Canadian indie-pop band Alvvays is an exploration of relationships and angst. The majority of the album is about love in various usually negative forms. The album opens with a song about obsessive stalker “Adult Diversion” and ends with the crushed hopes of a lover who wished their partner cared in “Red Planet.” If Sufjan Stevens’ music could be described as depression porn, Alvvays would be angst porn disguised as sunny pop songs. Every track on the album lulls the listener into that not quite happy, not quite sad sense of yearning. While the feel and the sound of the band is consistent throughout the album, boasting a summertime soundtrack of romantic, wistful memories, the musical style varies track to track. The lead single “Marry Me Archie” is loud and energetic, while “Ones Who Love You” turns up the reverb to make a dreamy psychedelic track. Together with “Party Police”, these were my favorite tracks on the album, all mourning an all-too temporary love. The only weak spot for me in a other wise stellar release is “Next of Kin”.
