A classic off her 2014 album Bury Me At Makeout Creek, Mitski’s “Townie” is a punk-influenced riot anthem for the chronic overthinker. Her sky-high runs are beautiful and piercing over her wall-of-sound band, and her voice is as precise as Graceland guitars as she laments the inevitable “why am I here?” of any classic edge-of-seventeen party. “Townie” is an open letter to fun drunk girls, boys who hunt for hookups, and abandoned houses in the middle of the woods. Mitski has no problem making her listeners re-evaluate their own party experiences through her jaded yet yearning eyes with a feeling of intellectual providence.
