Darling - Real Estate

Released January 24, 2017

“Darling” is only marginally different from past Real Estate tracks, despite the lineup changes the band has gone through. It retains a melodic guitar line, pensive lyrics, and an upbeat tempo. Like The Drums’ “Blood Under My Belt”, it is reminiscent of warmer days spent beneath the sun. Just as the song croons “Impatiently I wait for you”, I look forward to the release of In Mind.

In Your Head - SKATERS

Released January 27, 2017

Formerly signed onto Warner Brothers Records, Skaters has reclaimed its freedom in a spirit they call “DIWOP2”, not a full embrace of the DIY mindset, but an open approach to “Do It With Other People Also”. Skaters brings a unique anthemic sound, with an energy that could fill stadiums. “In Your Head” is especially powerful, a confident track that you can easily find yourself immersed in.

My Old Man - Mac Demarco

Released January 31, 2017

To me, “My Old Man” has a more subdued sound than Mac Demarco’s usual jangle pop tunes. With the simple percussion and acoustic backing, “My Old Man” almost comes across as more sincere and intimate. It is heavily nostalgic, and reminds me of pensive neighborhood walks through sparse grass and bare trees. “My Old Man” is my favorite of the two released singles, probably for the personal memories its evoked for me, but I have no doubt that other listeners, too, must find solace in its reminiscent tone.

This Old Dog - Mac Demarco

Released January 31, 2017

“This Old Dog”, the title track of Mac Demarco’s new album, is more vibrant but equally wistful -- “This old dog ain’t about to forget”. While not as eccentric as the Salad Days tracks, “This Old Dog” has the same adante walking pace as many of the tracks on Another One. It is just as relaxing.

Shuffle - Vundabar

Released February 14, 2017

Vundabar plans to rerelease Gawk on March 10. Loud and brash, “Shuffle” reeks of charismatic energy amid falsetto singing and dynamic drops. The initial roar of guitar suddenly gives way to a soft, vulnerable mumble, timidly singing “I just want to hear my own voice”. In waves of confidence, the line is reasserted over and over again, until you’re not sure if it’s chanted out of narcissism or self-revelation. All digital proceeds of “Shuffle” goes to Planned Parenthood.

Big Beautiful Day - PWR BTTM

Released February 14, 2017

I’ve officially made up my mind to love PWR BTTM and embrace it for all its energy and defiant lyrics. “Big Beautiful Day” is the friend that consoles you when your self esteem plummets at the hands of a boy. “Big Beautiful Day” says, “Curse that motherfucker who would spit upon another’s body”. PWR BTTM wants more, deserves more, and demands more, and tells you that you should, too.

America Forever - Mathew Lee Cothran

Released February 24, 2017

Cothran, songwriter behind Coma Cinema and one-half of Elvis Depressedly, is consistently dedicated to the lo-fi genre, complete with scuzzy vocals and distorted guitar and keyboard chords. Cothran experiments with autotune throughout Judas Hung Himself in America, painting a sound that I personally am not sure I am fond of. For me, the artistic use of autotune usually takes multiple plays to get used to, but the album overall is worth the initial listen. In “America Forever”, Cothran also plays around with vocal effects, and his lyrics reverberate as if he is speaking into a fan. His sweet and ironic devotion doesn’t linger in this short two-minute track, as if it is swept away by the wind.
