In a way that songs rarely do, Joy Again’s “Necromancer” evokes a very thorough and deeply-felt calming effect. A diamond among rocks, “Necromancer” sparkles clear and precise with melancholy tones and heartfelt words. When you listen to it, it feels like art; a true gem that is surprisingly unrecognized and pretty far underground. That being said, the entire EP stands out in a sea of other generic lo-fi albums, and provides a stark contrast to the usual grainy or raucous noises. The singer of this particular song doesn’t have a particularly stunning voice, but does have a certain timbre that is all serene, smooth, and captivating. There’s not much going on in the song besides slow, gentle strumming, but it somehow works and highlights the lyrics and demo-like quality.
As the chords slide up and down, he sings, “Oh necromancer, put a spell on me, with kisses so sweet they rub my teeth”. This song is not as depressing as it makes you believe it is. The melody brings to mind feelings of heartbreak and loneliness, but if you ignore that and focus on the words, it describes an infatuated romance reminiscent of a first love. It conjures up moments of adolescence, in the beginning of a relationship where you still want to see them every day. The type of love that is in the stage where you want to curl up next to your person and never leave. This song is slow as molasses, sweet as dripping honey, and would rot the teeth of a cynic, but is still rather lovely if you have a sweet tooth.
