For dreaming.
The rest of their discography aside, Deafheaven’s “Dream House” is probably one of the best songs I’ve ever heard that satisfies a particular emotional void— namely, the desire to be consumed by a piece of music. It starts with just shredding guitar, cluing in the experienced metalhead to what comes next: an explosion of blistering tremolo and blast beats, almost obnoxious in its unexpected of major key, expressing ecstatic joy, although the lyrics (entirely incomprehensible but still compelling) paint a more subdued, melancholy picture of suicidal ideation.
Yeah, it’s that kind of song. The song rises then falls then rises then falls once again, like a two-tiered explosion capped by a post-rock crescendo. Not for the faint of heart. Pair with the guitar+piano outro “Irresistible” for the complete emotional roller coaster ride. It’s immensely overwrought; it’s everything. A pink sun melting in your mind.
