Pensive, innovative and masterful. Such terms I find are a worthy description of the works of Zoltan Gal, known in the Drum & Bass scene as ICR. His 2008 single ‘Almost There / Somebody Else’ on Influence Records is a cinematic work above all. On ‘Almost There’, the drums are crisp clear, and while intricately programmed, stay simple enough to let the ambience shine though. Wistful pianos meander through oceans of reverb, reminiscent of days spend on foggy coastlines.
‘Somebody Else’ takes the more minimal route of the two tracks. A rolling break and plucky effects are worked in around the percussive bass. A couple of lines from a film I cannot identify fills the breakdown and completes the atmosphere of the track.
