Temecula Sunrise - By Dirty Projectors

Named after the McMansion-filled outskirt of Los Angeles, “Temecula Sunrise” evokes a similar Californian warmth in all regards. The off-kilter guitar parts feel like the sonic equivalent of a glittery and shimmering midday; the vocal harmonies are vast and sprawling, like the city’s orange highways at sundown. A danceable backbeat juxtaposes these melodic intricacies, making the song much easier for the listener to digest and actually enjoy. But what makes the song a standout on Bitte Orca, an album already full of powerhouse singles, is its tender lyrics. Dave Longstreth invites the listener into a lifestyle that partakes in both suburban ideals and youthful lawlessness; the backyard is even large enough to have a greenhouse for you to get wasted in. In abstaining from the usual, vague metaphors, he makes himself as vulnerable as one does when they open their homes to anyone, flaws and all.
