One listen to “Totalizer” by Charly Bliss makes it painfully clear that Eva Hendricks is not fucking around. Yeah, she’s having fun, but she’s indebted to the pro-girl garage rock scene familiar to Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill, and she is committed to paying her dues and standing her ground. She pays homage by using her cutesy voice to emit unapologetic shrieks through Spencer Fox’s hard-rock shoegaze riffs. “Totalizer” and Charly Bliss’ 2017 album Guppy is an unexpected yet delightful mixture of grunge and bubblegum vibes, as explored by bands like Diet Cig and The Courtneys. In fact, this whole album is short, sweet, and incredibly welcome for this summer’s weird vibe. And hey, at only 29 minutes, the whole thing is worth a listen.
