While Governor’s Ball and Panorama have been sweeping headlines this year, Northside Festival still rules New York as an unsung powerhouse. Following a similar model to that of SXSW, game-changing artists took over some of the city’s best venues during various time-slots, allowing attendees to come and go at their leisure.

Closing out the jam-packed weekend was an all-star lineup of acts that brought together emo kids from all generations. Costume-clad members in the front row and shoeless crowd-surfers were among some of the most memorable, visual displays of enthusiasm felt by the whole crowd. From long-time veterans (Jeff Rosenstock and Thursday) to new favorites (PUP, The Hotelier, and Tony Molina) there was something for everyone to enjoy, with the emphasis on everyone. Banners that read “Protect Immigrant Communities” and “Refugees Are Welcome” waved proudly behind headliners Thursday, and the lack of monetarily priced tickets promoted equity that has yet to exist worldwide. The blistering heat seemed to bring out the warmth in everyone, and nothing says friendship like sharing ten boxes of fresh Brooklyn pizza backstage.

Special thanks to Tim Payne (Thursday) for the opportunity to see and document this amazing show from backstage, but more importantly for the many years of friendship and amazing instruction.
