M83, famous for producing vibrant electronic tracks, seems to produce the perfect soundtracks for late night drives. First it was “Midnight City”, a song that launched M83 into popularity and attained extensive praise in 2011. It was impossible to hear that track without immediately imagining yourself driving in a shiny convertible through a colorful city, as the title itself implies. “Laser Gun” is no different, as well as many other tracks off M83’s latest album, Junk (2016), notably “Go!”.
What pleasantly distinguishes “Laser Gun” is the sharp, distinct beat, and the heavy feature of Mai Lan’s energizing voice. “Laser Gun” is a track that only gets better as it goes on, though it starts out strong with a unique piano strain and relatively nonchalant melody. The chorus is a explosion of brief synthy energy that only becomes more exuberant each time it returns. It’s hard to pin down the best part of the song, especially when hearing the angelic interlude and the saxophone line that immediately follows.
