GENRE: Alterative / Rock / Indie / Psychedelic

SOUNDS LIKE: Bleached, Skaters, White Stripes

Loud and unapologetic, artful and melodic, Cherry Glazzer is a unique mixture of laid-back LA spirit and unflinching punk power. Cherry Glazerr began in 2012 when frontwoman Clementine Creevy published a series of bedroom SoundCloud demos under the name “Clembutt”. The demos, which eventually birthed a lineup of bassist Sean Redman and drummer Hannah Uribe, quickly caught the attention of Burger Records. After Cherry Glazerr’s striking sound continued to draw attention, notably from Hedi Slimane, creative director for Yves Saint Laurent (for which they wrote “Had Ten Dollaz”), they finally released their first album, Haxel Princess in 2014.

Today, Cherry Glazerr is energized by multi-instrumentalist Sasami Ashworth and drummer Tabor Allen. Though its lineup has changed, Cherry Glazerr’s signature sound has endured. Their second and most recent album, Apocalypstick (2017), continues to feature defiant lyrics and sweet, reverberating riffs.

Cherry Glazerr’s music alone is enough to win your heart and make you want to tackle your problems all at once with confident nonchalance. Its lyrics always stray from stereotypes, never falling into any one of the many categories the band occupies -- feminist, powerful, casual, cheeky. Creevy, the main songwriter of Cherry Glazerr, always interjects an element of comedy into her lyrics -- whether through self-deprecation, blatant irony, or little tongue-in-cheek quips. One of my favorite tracks, “White’s Not My Color This Evening” is quite literally about getting your period, with the frank lyrics, “I feel like a turd” and “I am irate”. The second track of Apocalypstick, “Trash People”, is a humorous song about how dirty the band’s habits are.

But there’s even more to love and admire about Cherry Glazerr then their music: Cherry Glazerr is charmingly named after KCRW-FM anchor Chery Glaser, who affectionately said of the band, “I almost feel like some proud aunt watching her nieces and nephews do well.” (www.latimes.com). Furthermore, Creevy began the band in highschool, and now nineteen, continues to manage most aspects of the band, including its creative vision and business plan. Together, Cherry Glazerr does it all: professional self-discipline, complex creativity, female solidarity, loud punk energy, and all while having a good time and making sure you do, too.
